An Interview With Ahmad Ali Lewis

I remember it vividly. I was siting with my bother in the trunk of what must’ve been a 1989 Ford F-350 pick-up truck; riding down the streets of San Fernando Valley in California. Two songs played over the radio that remain in my mind to this day — Snoop Doggy Dogg’s “Gin And Juice” and Ahmad’s “Back In The Day”.

Len Xiang (a.k.a. Tuac) is a singer/songwriter. His amazing voice that oozes pain & reflection is highlighted here. I’ve had the pleasure to watch his growth as an artist over the past 7 years & he’s one of my many inspirations in the world of music.

He’s been working hard starring in a short film entitled “The Bluest Note” which was successfully funded by the support of Kickstarter. Here’s the trailer:

Ceima messaged me one night back in October to tell me that she had the perfect space for us to get some dance photos done. I’ve done several shoots with her but we never found a place with enough space for us to get quality dance shots. I got excited when she started to describe the space to me and I practically jumped out of my chair when she sent me pictures of the space. We set a date and since it was gonna be like a month I figured I had plenty of time to plan it so I focused on my other closer shoots instead.

ABOUT THIS SHOOT

  • Model - Ceima
  • Location - Avalon Communites in New Rochelle (Penthouse Lounge)
  • Time Of Day - 11:00 AM - 4:30 PM

Well the day was fast approaching for us to get these shots done so I decided it was time to start putting my gameplan down on paper. Only problem was… I was having a complete creative mental block!!

I honestly don’t know what happened to me but I couldn’t come up with anything creative for my model to do; it sucked because I was finally gonna get to add something to my portfolio that I desperately wanted which was dance and I didn’t want to waste the opportunity. I told Ceima about my problem and she just laughed at me (I’ve known her almost 20 years so she’s allowed). She had such complete confidence in me that I pretty much gave up worrying on the spot.

I’m happy to say that the second I was behind the camera and my adrenaline started pumping, my mind was flooded with ideas! I wound up with so many beautiful images that I had to enlist help to narrow down the images for editing.

EQUIPMENT USED

  • Canon EOS 40D
  • Two Flashes: Canon 430EX II Speedlite
  • One White Shoot Through Umbrella
  • Two Light Stands
  • Radiopopper Flash Trigger w/ Receivers
  • One Beautiful Dancer

Thanks to my beautiful model for providing me with a wonderful opportunity and for once again putting her time and body at my disposal to get some great shots.

It Was A Good Day Ice Cube The Predator 0 Plays

Donovan Strain figured out when Ice Cube had his “good day”. On his blog, Murk Avenue, he used some CrazyDopetastic deductive reasoning to determine the exact day in mention.

The logic is as follows: The song, which was released on February 23, 1993, references Yo MTV Raps, which began airing on August 6, 1988, creating a potential five-year window when the titular good day could have occurred. The lyrics of the song also reference the Lakers beating the Sonics on the day in question: Of the instances when the Lakers beat the Sonics in that five-year period, only four happened on smogless days in Los Angeles. Of those four, two took place before beepers — also referenced in the lyrics — had been adopted. On one of the two remaining days, Ice Cube was hard at work on the set of Boyz in the Hood, leaving January 20, 1992 as the only possible “Good Day.”“

-  NY Mag

No word yet from Ice Cube himself on whether he got it right. But if he is right, let’s all lobby for January, 20th to be named “National ‘Good Day’ Day”!

‘Seven’ by Alicia James

Alicia James — ‘Seven’

Alicia James is a YouTube “celebrity”, known for the natural hair tips she gives. Her album ‘Seven’ is a great, soulful, honest & sincere set of music. There’s an easy listen quality to her music and tone in her voice. As far as the writing, it’s fairly simple but not lacking, it fits. It’s light enough to understand and heavy enough to feel and relate to. I could listen to this gem straight through on repeat without skipping a song for hours. Here’s the official music video for “Seven”:

Download her album on iTunes & follow her online. Also, check out my full review of ‘Seven’ by Alicia James on my website. Here are a few links to her:

I conducted this shoot with my friend and makeup artist, Natalia.  I really wanted to do something that channeled Billie Holiday. I think, after it was all over, it turned out more Dorothy Dandridge instead.

Had to do a bit of improvisation, I knew what I wanted but I didn’t have a lot of the props for my disposal on that day. I decided to focus heavily on the reflective nature of the dresses material. It, on it’s own, was eye catching to me.

ABOUT THIS SHOOT

  • Model - Natalia
  • Location - Brooklyn Bridge Park
  • Time Of Day - 7:30PM to 11PM
  • Weather - COLD!

I brought along my usual flashes, stands and modifiers. I’m a huge fan of heavy shadows and I generally work with one light; but because of the dress, I decided that two flashes would be more appropriate. I left the flash that hits her back completely bare. For the flash that hits her front, I used a shoot through umbrella to modify the light so that it wrapped around her face and body smoothly. You can see the results.

The special guest in this shoot was the Manhattan skyline. The hardest part of this shoot wasn’t so much lighting her as it was making sure that I kept the integrity of the skylines lights in my background.

EQUIPMENT USED

  • Canon EOS 40D
  • Two Flashes: Canon 430EX II Speedlite
  • One White Shoot Through Umbrella
  • Two Light Stands
  • Radiopopper Flash Trigger w/ Receivers
  • One Gorgeous Latina Model & Assistant

All in all, for someone who is more comfortable working behind the scenes than being in front of the camera, Natalia always gives me consistently gorgeous images. I love working with her; as soon as it gets warmer, we’re gonna go back out and shoot some more.

‘Pariah’ is CrazyDopetastic™

It’s unfortunate. It’s unfortunate that a gem such as Pariah isn’t in every movie theater across this country. This is indeed a film that every human must see.

Executive Produced by Spike Lee & co-starring Kim Wayans, it is a CrazyDopetastic™ look into the life of one lesbian teen raised in Brooklyn, NY. From love, acceptance, to pain & growth; it plucks at every heart string. It’s honesty & genuine emotions capture you. I implore you to take a try with this film. It was, for me, one of the best of 2011.

Glory featuring B.I.C. Jay-Z Unknown 20 Plays

Named after the album’s The Blueprint & 4 (IV), by Jay-Z & Beyoncé respectively, Blue Ivy Carter embraced this world on January 7th, 2012. Jay-Z couldn’t wait to release in the booth & created “Glory” in honor of her. She may hold the world record of being the youngest guest artist on a track, as she makes a cameo appearance in the end of the song at the time of her birth.

An Interview With Martin Luther McCoy

I first heard of Martin Luther (aka Martin Luther McCoy aka Martian Luther) back in 2007 when I was browsing through television channels & stopped on VH1 Soul. An Erykah Badu video was on & on so I had to listen. When it ended this dude Martin Luther came up & I thought, “who’s this?” He began singing ‘NYCG (New York City Girl)’ & I became an instant fan of his art. I later purchased his albums The Calling & Rebel Soul Music; both of which are CrazyDopetastic™.
